Endurance Continues

We are continuing with the reading of Ernest Shakleton's journey in the Antarctic. Their ship has fallen to the bottom of the sea and the crew is floating on an ice floe at the mercy of the ocean currents. For homework this week you have a choice of either illustrating a scene or writing a diary entry or letter home telling about the adventure. The assignment is due on Thurs., May 14th.

Please return your textbook this week! Next Mon. is the 6th grade Olympics and we will be outside all day.

Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World

This week we are continuing with reading about Ernest Shackleton's adventure in the Antarctic. Presently, the crew is frozen in an ice floe hoping to survive the long, dark winter in the ship.

For homework this week, students had a sheet to calculate take-home pay from a paycheck. Students were also supposed to think about what expenses you would have if you were paying all your own bills. We are also reading an article in Jr. Scholastic about the Great Depression.

Antarctica

This week we are beginning a book about Ernest Shackleton's expedition to the bottom of the world. We will read together in class and there will also be written assignments to complete. His journey is one of the most amazing expeditions in the history of explorations.

We are also looking at personal finance. Why is it important to manage credit wisely? What is a credit score? Why is my paycheck so small?

We are also following the Swine Flu outbreak. How does it spread? Do different countries handle it differently? Will it affect us in Ga.?

CRCT Week

This is our big week. Get plenty of rest and eat a good breakfast so that you can do your best each morning. There is no homework this week. If you have fine point markers bring them to class for an art project. Progress Reports will be going home on Thurs., April 23rd and Fri., April 24th. In an effort to save paper, your student will be bringing a half sheet of paper with grades. Because the schedule is altered due to CRCT testing, you will recieve half of the grades Thurs. and the other half on Fri. Please sign and have your child return the form.

The Land Down Under

This week we are looking at the landforms of Australia and working on a map of the country. We will also look at the government of Australia and compare how it is similar to the United Kingdom and how it is different. For homework this week, first and third periods have a page of an alphabet book due on Thurs., April 16. The page should be simply written and on an 8 1/2 x 11 inch page of paper. Each student was assigned a different letter of the alphabet. 2nd, 4th, and 5th periods have a review sheet due on Thurs., April 16. On Fri., April 17th there is a quiz over material covered this week.

Latin American Governments

We are looking at the governments of Latin America this week. For many reasons, the governments have had more struggles than North American governments have had. 1st and 3rd period are to choose a scene from The Secret of the Andes to illustrate for homework this week (due 3-20). Include a sentence or two describing the scene. 2nd, 4th, and 5th period have a review sheet on independence which is due on Fri. There will be a quiz on Fri.(3-20) over material covered this week in class.

Mar. 9

We are finishing up modern Mexico this week. There is a test on all of Mexico on Wed., Mar. 11. A review sheet was given out on Mon. and we will also review in class on Tues., Mar. 10. Next, we are going to be looking at South American governments in general and specifically at Brazil.

There is no homework this week other than studying for the test on Wed.

Modern Mexico

This week we are talking about modern Mexico. We have looked at how their government is set up and will look at some of the customs of the country. There is a homework sheet for periods 2, 4, and 5 due Fri., Mar. 6th. Periods 1 and 3 have a choice between researching Pancho Villa or researching the meaning and significance of the Mexican flag.

Money!

This week we are going to spend the first part of class talking about money, trade and business. For homework, pretend that you have $100 to spend this week. Dream about what you would like to get or do with the money. List several things you are thinking about doing with the money. Decide what is at the top of your list and tell what you will do and why. If you can show exactly what you will get from a website, include printouts. For example, if you would like to order 3 shirts on clearance from a company online, print out the ticket showing the items. This assignment is due Fri., Feb. 27th. On Fri., Feb. 27th you will have an economics quiz.

Spanish Influences in Latin America

Last week we looked at Latin American civilizations before the Spanish arrived. Both the Mayas and the Aztecs had many Gods, grew a variety of crops, had a form of communication, and art. This week we are looking at how the civilizations changed when the Spanish arrived. On Fri., Feb. 20, a review sheet is due for homework for all classes. There will also be a quiz on Fri., Feb. 20th, over the Inca, Mayan, and Aztec civilizations and their downfall.

In 1st and 3rd periods we are beginning a book called Secret of the Andes. It is an AR book about a young Inca boy who has to choose which path he desires to take in life.
