Writing

Superheroes2 In Language Arts class we will begin some new writings. In order to make writing a little more interesting for the students, we are going to use some unique websites. We will begin by designing our own "Super Heroes" using the Ideas to Inspire Website.  Click on the link to get started.  www.ideastoinspire.co.uk/ Parents, let your student share their ideas with you.  They can show you the hero they have created on this website and then discuss some ideas for writing about the super hero.

In Ms. Mobley's seventh grade study skills class, we will be taking a multiple intelligence test to give the students an opportunity to determine their methods of learning. They may find it to be quite informative.

READ AND WRITE

The Language Arts and Reading Departments are trying to coordinate many of our activities so that students will receive added benefit. It is so important for students to see "good writing", so we encourage them to read as much as possible. As they read, they will become more familiar with the mechanics, conventions, and style of good writing. Our hope is that this familiarization will spill over into the students own writing. Parents, please monitor your students to be sure they are engaged in reading for at least 20-30 minutes per day.

Language arts classes are also coordinating with the science classes. Teachers are helping the students to research for their Science Fair projects. The research will culminate into a writing assignment for the language arts classes as well as the science classes. The following links will put you in touch with some great activities for both reading and writing. The students are familiar with some of these as we have used them in class.

Read, Read, Read

All of our materials for the Language! program have arrived.  This is the new reading program that Pine Mtn. has instituted in all of our small group reading classes.  Students start in 6th grade on Level A and will progress to Level C or D by the time they complete the 8th grade.  It is our hope that low level readers will make significant progress each year.  Language! is a tried and true program, and we are extremely excited about having all of the components.

If you would like to see how the program works you may log on to: http://florida.teachlanguage.com Your student will have online access as well.  The website is interactive.    I will  send home information for parents on Friday, September 26 after I have shared "what to do" and "how to do" with the students.

Help end world hunger

As a supplement for building vocabulary, we are using a program on www.freerice.com  This program allows students to work on both vocabulary and grammar, so we will be using it in our language arts class as well.  You will also receive information from Mr. Moody concerning its use in math classes for multiplication.  We believe this is an exciting way for students to improve their skills as well as participate in a worthy cause.  For every correct answer, "free rice" donates 20 grains of rice to world hunger. We would like to carry this a step further by having the students match the "free rice" donations and give to a local food bank or ministry.   With his math classes, Mr. Moody is calculating the approximate number of grains of rice in a 1lb. bag.  When the students reach that amount, we will ask that they bring in a bag of rice for donation.  Logs will be issued for students who wish to participate from home.

HERE WE GO....

It's that time of year again!  School has started and we are ready to ROCK AND ROLL! Yes, it's only the first week of school, but we are jumping right in to both reading and language arts. We have begun our reading assessments to determine reading levels for all of our students.  In language arts we have completed our baseline writings, and actually began work in our Effective Writing workbooks today.

SUMMER READING:  Since we have new students to Pine Mountain we will extend the summer reading projects until the end of August. New students were given the summer reading list when they registered, so please choose an author and select a book. Please try to complete the reading by the end of August. Students who have finished reading a book should bring that book to school and we will do the project in class.
