Trial of Jack Merridew

The first day of trial in every period was a little, but second day was much better.

1st period prosecutors have gotten the hang of asking relevant questions for the direct examination of witnesses. Jack's treason is only believable if you can prove Ralph established a government.

6th period prosecutors scored a hit with Dr. Peterson's psychological evaluations of the boys. Defense ask good questions on cross.

7th period prosecutors are lucky to have such a good doctor. Dr. Harvey was quick on cross examination to defend his belief that the marks/bruises on Samneric were caused by spear points because he could compare them to the spear wounds on Simon and tusk cut on Jack. GOOD!

Trial of Jack Merridew to begin Monday, May 11

Language Arts classes will begin the trial on Monday, May 11. Opening statements are due. First witnesses will be called.

We have spent a  week preparing and most have been working very hard on this. Be sure to try to get all interviews done by end of period Friday.

A press conference will be held. Attending the press conference will be the naval officer, the detective, and one district attorney (prosecutor). Journalists will ask questions. The deputy (bailiff) will walk by with Jack in handcuffs. Although Jack has been arrested, remember that he is INNOCENT until proven guilty. The burden of proof is on the prosecution. Defense attorneys don't have to "prove" anything.

Everyone must keep good records, so I have given each of you a folder. Medical doctors and psychologists, be sure that everything is stapled and neatly done by Friday. Your records will be subpoenaed. Witnesses, you are allowed to take a book to the stand with you. Detectives, you must have all evidence recorded. You may not take the stand to answer questions on any evidence that is not recorded in your log.

There are a few students who are embarrasingly late turning in the persuasive business letter and revision of the expository essay on LOTF. These were due April 27.

Enrichment classes, we are reading Zachary Beaver. I do not have any copies to let you take home so make good use of the class time you are given to read! We will have a quiz on the first half of the book Tuesday.

Welcome Back Students

Enrichment students,

It appears that I gave you two due dates for your poster that will accompany your oral presentation. The due date will be April 20 which is next Monday.  Don't forget. If you have the poster this week, you will receive 5 bonus points. All presentations are due Tuesday, April 21. I will accept volunteers or I will choose students at random to present. Your music format should be Ipod or CD. Since you have had quite some time to prepare these presentations, I know they will be informative, insightful, and well-organized. It will be a nice way to spend next week. After testing during the morning periods, we can enjoy presentations with music.

Language Arts students,

You will be making revisions on your mask essay and typing your persuasive letter. Both of these items are due by next Monday, April 20. We will have lap tops on Monday, April 13, and we will be in the computer lab Wednesday, April 15 and Monday, April 20.

All students,

The website for practice CRCT tests is www.georgiaoas.org

I will give you your special id for logging in. Your password is education.

While in the computer lab, you will take practice tests. You may take these from home also.

Using Lord of the Flies for Grammar Study

We have used the book to review sentence structure, functions of nouns, the difference between verbs and verbals. Now we are going to learn about pronoun case. Personal pronouns can show number and gender. That's easy and we don't really have to spend time on that. What we will spend some time on is pronoun case, especially the distinction between subject case and object case. We will use the Chapter 9 reading guide to get us started on learning pronoun case. Do not turn in Chapter 9 until you have identified pronoun case of all the bold pronouns.

Read Chapter 10 for Friday. We will finish the book by next Friday.

Please turn in reading assignments on time (Who Says It? etc.).
