Language Arts Homework

Week of 5/18 - 5/22:  Plans for the final week in Language Arts!

All textbooks should have been returned from home.  Replacement cost of Writing and Grammar textbook:  $65.47.

Monday, 5/18:  Turn in your Poetry Project!  Sharing activity.

Tuesday, 5/19:  PMMS Olympics!  Don't forget to wear your team's color and have fun!  (Bring your sack lunch, unless you ordered one through your homeroom teacher; bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and water, if you'd like - but NO COLAS OR BEVERAGES OTHER THAN WATER.)

Wednesday, 5/20:  Rewrite the four types of sentences according to the functions indicated on a powerpoint or envelope-task assigned to your table.  Due at the end of class.

Thursday, 5/21:  Revise sentences using double negatives; correct words and phrases that are used incorrectly.  Due at the end of class.  Organize writing portfolios and select one assignment to be forwarded to your 8th grade language arts teacher.  Take portfolio home and feel proudly about your accomplishments!

Friday, 5/22:  Final Day of School for the 2008-09 school year!  Activities will be announced.

Week of 5/11 - 5/15:  Students had class time to write, type, and illustrate their 12 original poems.  Follow the guidelines in your packet.  Due:  Monday, 5/18 (Typed or written in black ink.  Do not include packet or rough drafts.)

Week of 5/4 - 5/8:

Mon., 5/4 - Poetry Project: Twelve original poems due Monday, May 18th.

Tues., 5/5 - Students are working individually in class following the guidelines for each type of poetry.  The eleven styles of poems are:  The "I Am" poem, Color Poem, Limericks (2), Quatrain, Cinquain, Haiku, Telephone Number Poem, Rigamarole, Diamante, Tanka, Lantern, and Name Poem.

Wed., 5/6 - Laptop Computers for researching poem styles and/or typing finished poems.  You should have 5 poems completed by Thursday (as a personal) goal.  Work at home only if you are behind.

Thurs., 5/7 - Laptop Computers.  Continue working on poetry.

Fri., 5/8 - Continue writing original poetry.  HW:  Bring a simple folder (no pockets necessary) for Monday.

Week of 4/27 - 5/1: 

Last week, students read a story about Tianneman Square in China - Yes; a connection to social studies!  The assignment was to answer questions 1 and 2 on p.10,  Jr.Scholastic magazine, March, 2009.  The vocabulary words were:  asylum, Cold War, Communist, converge, and martial law.  The challenge was to use all five words in as few sentences as possible!

The following sentences were submitted by Sharon L.  "People in China converged together to protest against martial law, and being Communist, the government sent troops to stop this madness.  The people who escaped went to the west and sought political asylum.  The protest began when the 40-year Cold War was declining."

The second assignment was to complete workbook pages 111 and 113.  Completion of pages 112 and 114 will receive extra points!  Along with the attached power point presentation about VERBS,this was a great review of the principal parts of (regular and irregular) verbs.

Wed., 4/29:  Literature book, Rd. pp.734-735.  Read "Full Fathom Five" and "Onomatopoeia" poems on pp.736-737.  Complete, "Review and Analysis" (1-5) on p.737.  Write questions and answers.  No HW.

Thurs., 4/30:  Read, "Maestro" p.738.  Using your notes and/or book, answer the questions on pp. 738-739, (1-3); (1-3).  Also, answer questions on p.740, (1-5); (1-4); (1-3); (1-5); (1-3).  Answers only.  No HW.

Fri., 5/1:  Introduction to Poetry Project.

 

Week of 4/20 - 4/24:    The CRCT Test for Language Arts will be on Wed., 4/22.

Language Arts classes will not meet every day due to the CRCT schedule.

Mon., 4/20 - Complete the CRCT Review started on Friday.

Week of 4/13 - 4/17:

Mon., 4/13 - Reading "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" by Rudyard Kipling.  Drawing inferences about the characters in the story.  No HW.   (3rd per. finish p.375, 11-25)

Tues., 4/14 - Complete story and video reading on Discovery Ed.  What can you infer about (name a character) from his/her behavior?  Choose two characters and answer the previous question for each.   HW:  #6, p.422 (Analyze and evaluate the story.)  Literature book questions from class:  Analyze:  Why is the story still popular after 115 years?  Evaluate:  Do you agree with the experts who praise the literary value of the story?  Explain.

Wed., 4/15 - Write a comparison-contrast essay based on two characters from the story.

Thurs., 4/16 - Turn in final essays on "Rikki Tikki Tavi".  Practice Test of Skills.  HW: Answer the questions, 1-20 by identifying the italicized parts of speech on the handout.

Fri., 4/17 - Parts of Speech, 1-20 Quiz.  HW was corrected with a classroom activity, therefore, each student had the opportunity to score 100 points!  HW:  None.

Mon., 3/23 - Turn in assign. from Friday.  Paragraphs (1-2) with the following identified: 5 adjectives, 5 adverbs, 10 nouns, and 5 pronouns.  Post-test on sentence structure.

Tues., 3/24 - Post-tests: Writing Process and Grammar and Mechanics.

Wed., 3/25 - Math Unraavel Warm-up - Day #51.  Diagramming Sentences, workbook pp.189-191.  (3rd per. will complete p.191 tomorrow.)  HW:  Complete unfinished classwork.

Week of 3/16 - 3/20:

All assignments, 1-10 practice quizzes should have been turned in.  (See 3/13 for details.) Today, students were given articles to read; note facts; and share with a partner.  Tomorrow, students pairs will compare/contrast the content of the articles as they relate to persuasive writing.  HW:  Finish your response to your article.  Students who preferred to work alone, have both articles.

Tues., 3/17 - Happy St.Patrick's Day!  Persuasive Business Letter activity:  Refering to the student sample on the screen in class, evaluate the effectiveness of the letter as to how persuasive it is.  Follow the guidelines on the graphic organizer.

Wed., 3/18 - Math-Warm-up Day #46.  Edit business letter using student sample and half sheet questions, 1-5.  HW:  p.375 in W.A.G. book, 1-10 (Conjunction and interjection practice.)

Thurs., 3/19 - Turn in HW.  Classwork: p.375, 11-25.

Fri., 3/20 - Create 1-2 paragraphs about something of interest to you.  Include and identify the following: 5 adverbs; 5 adjectives; 10 nouns; and 5 pronouns.  Extra points for identifying any other parts of speech (articles, prepositions, conjunctions, interjections, and verbs).

Last week in LArts:

Friday, 3/13 - Turn in WAG workbook practice (from Wed./Thurs.):  pp.31-36 (adverbs) and pp.175-176 (capitalization).  HW:  Finish 10 sentence quiz that you are creating for a classmate.  Include 5 sentences that have at least one adverb, but do NOT underline the adverb.  Write 5 sentences without any capitalization OR you can capitalize letters that should not be capitalized.

See the powerpoint (above) for ideas involving adverbs.  7th per. will finish in class today.  3rd and 6th per. students should finish for HW, if necessary.

As a result of your research, you will create a power point presentation and a persuasive letter to The Carter Center as you convince them to consider your issue of concern for those people you've chosen in Asia.  (You will be studying Asia in social studies, as well.)

Week of 3/2 - 3/6:

Mon., 3/2 - Rough drafts of persuasive business letters to The Carter Center are due.  Make up work from week of 2/23 is due today. 

Tues., 3/3 - Peer editing of rough drafts.  Papers were collected.  HW:  Make up work.

Wed., 3/4 - Write final draft of persuasive letter.  HW:  Make up work.

 

Week of 2/23 - 2/27:

THIS IS THE WEEK OF MAKE-UP WORK!  Parents, work is being sent home along with a deficiency to be signed by you, please.  Students, return the signed deficiencies (and any late progress reports) along with your completed make-up work by Mon., 3/2. Make up work will receive partial credit.

If you need help with your assignments, please come to either or both of the following help sessions for L.Arts or SS:  Tues., 2/24 @ 8:15am or Thurs., 2/26 after school until 5:15.

Classwork and HW for the Week of 2/23 - 2/27:

Mon., 2/23 - FINAL 2 days to research 3 RESOURCES and information for your power point and persuasive paper.  HW:  Catch up on research - power point due Wednesday.  If you've been given a make-up work packet, it is due Friday, 2/27.

Tues., 2/24 - FINAL day to research information for power point.  HW:  Research Power Point is due tomorrow!  (Don't forget make-up work packets - due Friday.)

Wed., 2/25 - Write a rough draft of your persuasive business letter to The Carter Center.  Format will be presented and you will add information from your research!  HW: Make up work.

Fri.,2/27 - Revise rough draft using a rubric for a persuasive paper.  Begin writing the final copy (for a test grade).  HW: Complete make-up work. Turn in make-up work on Monday.

Mon., 3/2 - Continue writing final draft of persuasive paper.  Share and evaluate power point presentations. Which issues will interest The Carter Center?  HW:  Finish typing (or writing neatly in ink) your persuasive letter.

 

 

 

Mon., 2/16 - Presidents' Day - Student Holiday-

Tues., 2/17 - Students received the second half of the Persuasive Research Packet.  Today's challenge was to begin citing sources; a minimum of three is required for your "Works Cited" page.  All students should have decided on an issue of concern in an Asian country and will let Ms. Lawrie know by tomorrow, Wed.

Wed., 2/18 - Media Center Research on Persuasive Power point through Monday, 2/23.  Check on-line resources at home using the pink Cobb Virtual Library reference sheet.  Complete the Almanac page on basic information about the country you've chosen to help.

Thurs., 2/19 - Continue working in Media Center and at home on Persuasive Research.  HW:  Signed progress reports are due no later than tomorrow.

Fri., 2/20 - Complete (3) pages of works cited (reference materials/websites used to create your power point).  Create power point following directions in packet.

 

 

Week of 2/9 - 2/13:

Mon., 2/9 - Read, highlight, and discuss "The Art of Persuasion" handout.

Tues., 2/10 - Answer "The Art of Persuasion" questions, 1-12.  Turn in.

Wed., 2/11 - Introduction to Persuasive Research/Writing Project.  Read the packet that you received today.  Decide which Asian country that you'd like to research; look for an issue to defend.  Think of something that the Carter Center would help you promote.  Are you worried about the lack of education for girls in another country?  Would you like everyone to experience democracy and freedom from human suffering?  HW:  Choose a topic and a country to begin researching tomorrow!  

Choose one of the following countries:  Japan, China, India, North Korea, South Korea, Indonesia, or Vietnam.

Thurs., 2/12 - Media Center.  Lesson on citing references; begin researching your country.

Fri., 2/13 - Media Center - Research through Feb. 23.  Students are working on individual powerpoint projects; will write a persuasive paper.  How would you persuade the Carter Center in Atlanta to help you help other people.  THE POWER OF ONE (INDIVIDUAL) - THAT'S YOU!!

Wed., 2/4 - Early Release Day. (Math Warm-up today.)   Complete research scavenger hunt.  Turn in.  Sentences taken from student papers.  Identify complete sentences (S); incomplete sentence fragments (F); run-on sentence (R).  HW:  (7th period)  1-33 sentences to be identified as S, F, or R.

Thurs., 2/5 - Continue sentence structure review.  7th: HW collected.  All classes have 1-50 to identify as S, F, or R (See Wed. for explanation.)  Final page, #34-50; underline subjects and verbs on sentences (S).  HW:  Complete assignment.

Thurs., 11/20 - Quiz - Section Review, p.355, Sec.23 (1-10), 24 (1-10),  p. 25 (1-5 p.26  Begin reading, "The Seventh Grade" by James Soto, pp.116-121.  Answer questions:  Analyze - What does Victor learn from his experiences?  Apply - How can you apply that lesson to life in general?

Wed., 11/12 - Referring to list of adjectives handout, students drew a graphic organizer with a circle in the middle; surrounded by eight boxes; selected a noun for the circle, and wrote eight sentences containing at least one adjective describing the noun.  Collected at the end of class.

Thurs., 11/13 - Turned in WAG workbook, pp.20-21; WAG textbook, p. 337 (1-10).  In class, powerpoint of 20 sentences written by students.  All students identified all adjectives in sentences, 1-20, on own paper which was collected.  To make up, click on attached link:

Mon., 10/27 - Continue reading play, "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street".   EQ: What causes people to be fearful?  (Standard: ELA7R1.e) Note events which may explain what is happening on Maple Street.  No HW.

Tues., 10/28 - Continue reading play, if necessary.  Complete "Literary Analysis Skillbuilder" to help identify the theme of the play. HW:  What is the theme of the play?  Write your answer on the bottom of the skillbuilder sheet.

Wed., 10/29 - "Constructive Criticism Evaluation" (1-6).  After reading, what are the important events of the story?  Write them; answer all questions.  HW:  Complete evaluation.

Thurs., 10/30 - Using the "Bloom's Higher Order Graphic Organizer", create a new ending from the perspective of "Figures One and Two".  HW:  4th per. complete organizer.  3rd per. complete Plot Diagram. 5th period - turn in "Obstacle" assignment on Friday.

Fri., 10/31  Diagram the plot of the story; complete the "Somebody-Wanted-But-So" chart to summarize the plot analysis. Create a new ending from the point of view of the aliens.   HW:  Complete charts and study for test on play.

Mon., 11/3 - Selection Test on "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street".  Complete rough draft of new ending to play.   No HW.

Tues., 11/4 - Student Holiday - National Election Day!





Week of 10/20 - 10/27:

Mon., 10/20 - Notetaking sheets will be collected as all groups' power point presentations have been viewed.  Students have created informative and interesting presentations relating to one of the following:  parts of speech, types of sentences, narrative writing, or response to literature.  Bring Spelling workbook to class.  HW:  Complete pp.20-21 in Spelling workbook. (You do not have to write a travel brochure, as seen on the bottom of p.20.)

5th - Mini-quiz returned.  Assignments will be color-coded for parts of speech practice.  Complete for homework if you do not finish in class.  HW:  Spelling workbook, pp. 20-21.

Tues., 10/21 - Finish viewing presentations (3rd and 4th periods), if necessary.  Turn in L.Arts placemat of notes taken.  Parts of Speech mini-quiz (classwork grade) given to help you see how much more you understand AND what you need to learn.  You will have an activity/assignment this week to help you.  (5th per., you have already taken the mini-quiz and should continue/check your individual assignments with a partner.)  HW: None for 3rd/4th, or 5th.

Wed., 10/22 - 3rd/4th receive mini-quiz results and assignments.  Due tomorrow. 5th per. -

Thurs., 10/23 - Individual assignments for parts of speech practice were turned in.  Classwork: Discussion and completion of "Obstacles" pre-reading questions and chart of story predictions.

Fri., 10/24 - Continued reading play.    Students continue to add facts to "Obstacles" sheet during reading.  No HW.

 

Week of 10/6 - 10/10:

Spelling workbook check - pp.18-19.  Complete p.20.  W & G workbook check - pp.45-50 (practice recognizing/constructing types of sentences).  Last call for narrative papers (including rough drafts in pencil)!  Complete locating and constructing sentence assignment from Friday using Literature book.  Turn in. 

Students were assigned a part of speech or other writing-related topic to research from Wed. - Fri. during class.  HW:  Have information ready to add to power point presentations.

Week of 10/13 - 10/17:

Monday & Tuesday - Laptop computer in classroom for creating a power point.  You and your partner(s) will teach your part of speech on Wed. and Thursday.  You will receive a placemat paper for recording information.

Wed. (Early Release Day) & Thursday - Teach using a powerpoint presentation and any other strategies that you'd like.  (Check additional strategies with Ms. Lawrie or Mrs. Jain before Wed.)  You must turn in your rough drafts and scoring rubrics before you present.  Your presentation should last 5-10 minutes.  Have fun with this!

Friday - Complete any unfinished presentations.  Groups will collaborate and share "placemat" recordings of what was learned.   Placemats will be collected and graded.

Week of 9/29 - 10/03:

Monday - Turn in (past due) narrative paper and rough/pencil draft.  Review of spelling words on p.18, 11 - 20.  Complete p.19 in book or on your own paper.  HW:  Write each word five times and turn in by Thursday, 10/2.  Spelling test on Thursday over these words which have unexpected consonant spellings:

Spelling words for 9/29:  distinquished, guacamole, extinguish, brochure, chauffeur, chandelier, exempt, exotic, exertion, overwhelming.

Tuesday - Bring spelling workbook to class to check p.19.  View power point presentation of types of sentences; take notes.  Use notes on Thursday to identify various types of sentences in literature.

Wed. - Bring Grammar and Writing workbook to class (if it is not already in the classroom).  Complete pp.45-50; simple/compound/complex sentence practice.

Thurs. - Spelling Test.  Use sentence notes to identify various types in literature.

Fri. -  Evaluation of student narrative writing.

Tuesday, 8/12 - Students jotted their ideas to answer the question, "Why do we write?"  Answers were compiled by teacher(s) and shared with students.    If you did not finish writing your answers, please do so and turn them in on Wed.

Students have read, "The Name," by Sandra Cisneros and began brainstorming ideas about their own names.  Finish your ideas about what your name means to you, someone else, the person who named you.  Is there another name that you'd rather have?

Wed., 8/13 - 10 question/pre-test given on subject/verb agreement.  Students wrote about their names using the ideas brainstormed on Tues.  HW:  Finish paper in pencil.

Thurs., 8/14 - Papers shared and collected.  "The Name" excerpt was re-read for emphasis and students compared and contrasted their story with the author's (Cisneros) story.  No HW, unless written paper not yet turned in.

Fri., 8/15 - D.O.L. (Daily Oral Language) practice #3.  Grammar challenge.

Thursday, May 21st:  Honors Assembly at 9:30 in the PMMS Theater for students and parents who received an invitation.

Monday, 5/18 - Turn in your Personal Finance Project.  Click on the link below (Week 5/3-5/8) for more information.

Project includes:

1.  Financial Checklist for Stages 1-4.

2.  Financial Worksheet with boxes A - D completed.  (Any extra information regarding saving or investing will count as extra points!)

3.  Weekly Meal Plan.

4.  Grocery List for Weekly Meal Plan.

5.  Attach any extra examples of your planning (i.e., pictures or text about your job, home, phone or cable plan). 

Tues., 5/19 - PMMS Olympics!  Wear comfortable clothes and your team's color.  You may bring a hat and sunglasses; sunscreen and water.  Be prepared to have a good time!

Wed., 5/20 - The World map assignment; to be completed with a partner.  Begin by "Making the Map" - instructions are on the back of the 17" x 22" map.  Bring colored pencils, if you have them.

Thurs., 5/21 - Continue working on the World Map Assignment in class, if you are not attending Honors Assembly.  Answer questions on the back of the map, "Where in the World Are You?" and choose one other category to complete.

Friday, 5/22 -  Color your world maps using the classroom colored pencils/crayons.  You will not be able to bring any notebooks to school today.

Week of 5/11 - 5/15:  Students worked in class on their Personal Finance Projects by locating jobs and occupations; finding affordable and conveniently located housing; deciding upon means of transportation; planning weekly meals and constructing a grocery list;  purchasing utilities, insurance, and adjusting to unexpected expenses.  Assignment is due on Mon., May 18th.

Week of 5/3 - 5/8: 

Mon., 5/3 - Students drew the flow chart for the Decision-Making Model used for analyzing the problems in their current events.  Current events from Thurs./Fri. were used.

Tues., 5/4 - In groups of same current events, students compiled information from their individual Decision-Making Models.  Large charts were posted along with individual charts.

Wed., 5/5 - Personal Finance Unit!  Student will draw his/her level of education (high school graduate, two years of college, technical school, four years of college, or graduate degree).  Begin working on finding a job based on your level of education.

Fri., 5/7 - Plan your weekly budget based on your expenses.  This may take several days because you must find a job and a place to live first!

Mon., 4/27 - Final CRCT test today - SOCIAL STUDIES!  All classes will meet, but will be shortened.   Turn in the three guided reading assignments (China-1,2,3).  Classwork and homework is to complete any unfinished assignment including (Japan-1).

Tues., 4/28 - Current Event Study.  Most students are completing their questions with a partner.  No HW.

Wed., 4/29 - Continue working on (pre-during-post-reading) current event tomorrow.  Turn in your response sheet along with your current event.  Complete the Japan-2 guided reading.  Finish for HW, if necessary.

Thurs., 4/30 - Current event activity using the information from Tuesday's assignment.

Fri., 3/13 - Review of information about India from Thurs.  Students participated in a play, "Archaeology Today" as either show hosts, archaeologists, or studio audience members.  After the play, students were asked questions about ancient India (theories and facts) to which they responded with "T" or "F" cards.  No HW.

5 current events were due on Dec. 5th.  The first current event was collected as a homework assignment on 9/12. All students were given an article relating to the Congo(Equatorial Africa) on 11/14.  The first region studied this semester was the Middle East.  Remember to follow the guidelines for the project in your 4-paged handout.  See the "Current Event Project" link on the home page of this blog.

Semester Reading Assignment - Read at least one A/R book relating to a country in the Middle East or Africa.  Take an A/R test; score will be counted as a project grade the 2nd 9 weeks.  You have received a handout on this.   Note:  This assignment was due on Wed., Dec. 3rd. (-10 pts. for each day late.) 

Students, next semester you will be studying Asia and reading an A/R book related to ANY Asian country.

Mon., 10/20 - 6th per. - complete water shortage in the Middle East power point/notes; summarize the current water concerns in SW Asia (Middle East).  7th per. - Class divided into two assignment groups.  Both lessons relate to the water shortage in the Middle East.  HW:  Finish classwork, if necessary.

Tues., 10/21 - Check OPEC assignment (from last week's "Econ. and Geo." handout). 

Wed., 10/22 - Collaborative Group Work:  Making a Decision About Governments.  Students will be researching information about the governments of Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Iran; rating findings after answering questions; report evaluation to a panel.  Panel of students will decide which group ranked the highest in determining the most citizen-friendly government.  HW:  Research more information about the government and laws for your meeting with the PANEL.

Thurs., 10/23 - Continue Collaborative Group Work.  Panel will announce the group or groups with the most points for presenting their information.  (Effort will be rewarded:)

Fri., 10/24 - 6th per. and 7th (Ms. Lawrie's group) met with a panel of judges to decide which country (Iran, Israel, and Saudi Arabia) has the most democratic government.  Charts and rating sheets were collected.   No HW. 

Week of 10/13 - 10/17:

Mon., 10/13 - 6th per. continue literature link to Middle East. (7th per. will begin.)  Read selection from Smoke Over Golan and answer "Analyzing the Reading" questions, 1-3.  Also read, We Live in Saudi Arabia, and answer questions, 1-3.  Socratic reading and discussion of "Culture" handout which explains the differences between ethnic groups and religious groups.

Tues., 10/14 - Complete, if necessary, reading and discussion.  Students turn in answers to literature questions written on handout from Monday.  "Oil in the Middle East" - power point/notes.   HW:  None.

Wed., 10/15 - Power point notes on "Oil in the Middle East" completed and turned in.  Write a paragraph (hypothesizing) about what the availability of oil will be like in 5-10 years.  HW: " Economics and Geography Activity" handout, 1-10, and finish paragraph.

Mon., 10/6 - Tic-Tac-Toe (one voc. term from Chap.16) by choosing one creative, brief presentation.  Review for Voc. Test.  HW:  Study Chap.16 vocabulary, parts I and II.

Tues., 10/7 - Chap.16 Voc. Test. 

Wed., 10/8 - Compare/Contrast life in Turkey(Ottoman Empire) before and after the rule of Mustafa Kemal.  Essential Question was answered for 2 points:  How did life change for women after the westernization of Turkey?  Charts will be collected on Thursday.

Thurs., 10/9 - Review of Wed.'s lesson.  Charts were collected.  Power point study of "Women of the Middle East" including cultural rules, literacy statistics, career and dress options for women in Turkey (SE Turkey) and Saudi Arabia.  Students complete half-sheet of questions 1-5 for discussion.

Fri., 10/10 - Complete presentation and questions, 1-5.  (Exit ticket - turned in as students exit the classroom.)  6th period began reading the two literature links to personal experiences in Israel and Saudi Arabia.  No HW.  End of 1st Nine Weeks Grading Period.

Week of 9/29 - 10/3:

Mon., 9/29 - Middle East Resources Project was due Fri.  Graded projects were returned today with an option to correct and turn in on Tuesday.   Timeline of conflicts in the Middle East was to be completed after comparing events within groups.    HW:  Remember- academic detention tomorrow until 5:15.

Tues., 9/30 - Add facts to timeline while viewing powerpoint timeline, "Conflicts of the Middle East."  Turn in completed timeline. 

Wed., 10/1 - Read, "Iraq Today" in Jr. Scholastic magazine.  Answer comprehension questions on 2-paged handout.  Turned in.  Reminder:  Voc. (Chap.16) Test on Tuesday, 10/7. 

Thurs., 10/2 - Academic Detention at 8:00 a.m. in classroom.  Ms. Lawrie will let you in the school at that time.  If you arrive after that, enter the school at 8:15 when opened.  Vocabulary of Chapter 16, Part II.  Use the textbook to write a sentence for each vocabulary term, or create your own sentences.  Parts I and II must be finished before tomorrow. Voc. Test on Tuesday, 10/7.

Fri., 10/3 - Vocabulary activity using Chapter 16, Parts I and II.  Turn in voc. after test on Tuesday.

Week of 9/22 - 9/26:

Monday -  Checked/turned in Opinion-Proof assignment (1-5) after students moved into Groups 1-5 and chose their best answers to prove or disprove their opinion statement.  Ideas were written on chart paper and posted.  No HW.  (Study of causes of conflict in the Middle East.)

Tues. - Students received the rest of their Middle East Resources Map project materials:  construction paper; guidelines for placement of map and resources key; two lists of countries and their resources.  (Map and key were already received.)  Bonus Points - for completing the project by Friday. Extra points for including visual highlights and a job well done!

Wed. - Class time will be allowed to work on adding natural resources to the map of Middle Eastern countries.  Due on Friday, the 26th.

Thurs. - Vocabulary Chapter 16-Part 1.  Identify/explain each term (p.450 - )  On another paper, write a sentence using each vocabulary term; 10 sentences.

Please read the following general information about your child's social studies class. 

**About SS reading books -  any story - fiction or non-fiction - that relates to any country in North Africa or Southwest Asia will be fine.  Remember - it must be an A/R book so that students will be able to take a test on what they've read.    See the PMMS Media Center website for info. on A/R or books with the theme we're looking for.  Students, keep reading!!:-)

Parents if you have not, you may register/pick up code for I-Parent (an on-line means to view your child's grades) between 8:45 - 4:00 p.m. in the Guidance Office.  If you have already registered, you do not have to register again.  If you do not remember your password, please email www.iparent@cobbk12.org.   PMMS does not have access to passwords.

The following supplies are requested for social studies:

A large book cover for a large social studies book,  a regular book cover for a composition notebook - if it does not have a plastic cover, colored pencils, and a section in a 3-ring binder notebook (any size) for keeping classwork, homework, and handouts.  The composition notebook will be used for daily warm-up assignments only.
