Week 22 - January 26-30

Remember Parent-Teacher Conferences are this week.  Students will be released early everyday.

This week in Georgia Studies we will continue our exploration of the growing division between North and South leading up to the Civil War.  The Underground Railroad will be the center piece of this week's lessons.

AC Students will also begin a Westward Expansion choice board project.  Details will be given in class.

Language Arts students will focus on writing conventions including phrases and clauses.  The "If I Were President" papers have been submitted to the Carter Center to be considered as part of their contest.  Our students' writing will compete with others from around Georgia. 

Week 21 - January 20-23

On Tuesday, all classes will eat lunch in their rooms to watch President Obama's Inauguration.

The 8th grade will take Georgia's Middle Grades Writing Assessment on Wednesday in Homeroom.  Please come to school rested, eat a good breakfast, and bring a blue or black pen with you.  Remember to take your time organizing your essay after you read the entire prompt.  Relax and do your best work.  Good luck to everyone!

This week in Georgia Studies we will begin Chapter 7, which focuses on the conflicts and compromises during the Antebellum period. 

AC Students will turn in Current Events #7 on Friday.

Language Arts students will spend one more day preparing for the MGWA by reading writing samples that exceed state requirements.  Then we will continue to develop writing strategies by making further revisions on the working drafts of the invention paper based on feedback.

Week 20, January 12-16

This week in Advisement, students will receive scheduling information for Parent-Teacher Conferences, which will be held January 26-30. 

This week in Georgia Studies we will finish chapter 6 by learning about Native American removal and the Trail of Tears in the context of Westward Expansion.  On Wednesday the study guide will be given, Thursday we will review, and Friday we will take the test. 

In Language Arts we will write final drafts of our "Spoiled" papers.  In addition, the Practice Middle Grades Writing Assessment will be returned to the students for revision in order to better prepare the the real test on the January 21st.

Week 19, January 6-9

Welcome back from vacation!  I hope all of you had a restful break with your family and friends.  Now it's time to buckle down and work hard through these long winter months. 

In Georgia Studies we will begin a unit called "Georgia in a Divided Nation."  This unit will analyze those factors that caused Georgia and the Southeast to develop as a distinct economic and political region before and after the Civil War.  During the next two weeks we will use chapter 6 in the textbook to learn about westward expansion.

In Language Arts we will prepare and review for the 8th grade Writing Assessment, which is only two weeks away.  We will analyze writing prompts, practice structured brainstorming, and review conventions and grammar.
