My name is Kathy McGuire and I am the nurse at Pine Mtn Middle School. This is my second year at PMMS. We had a wonderful year last year and I know that this one will be even better! My goal is to help your child stay as healthy as possible. This is a crucial time in your child's life when they are forming habits that will carry over into their adult life. With that in mind I offer the following tips:
1. Middle school students need 8 1/2-9 hours of sleep each night to feel rested. They may try to tell you otherwise but it has been proven that lack of sleep will cause problems with concentration and ability to focus in class.
2.Ensure that they eat something for breakfast. It really IS the most important meal of the day and provides the fuel they need for morning classes.
3. Encourage your child to eigher bring a healthy lunch from home or choose from the daily cafeteria line choices. Monitor what they spend their lunch money on. Contrary to popular belief among the kids, a big cookie with a 20oz. Gatorade is NOT a nutritional meal. As a parent YOU control the purse strings---just say NO to unhealthy options. Childhood eating disorders and obesity are on the rise and we have a responsibility to our children to help them learn how to make healthy choices.
4.Find a way for your child to be physically active when not in school. Take a walk with them, ride bikes together, encourage them to participate in a sport or dance. Fresh air and exercise will help relieve stress and gives you another opportunity to connect with them.
5. If your child has a medical issue and is taking medication at home which may affect his/her behavior or schoolwork please let me know, especially if it is a new prescription.
6. Please make sure that you provide CORRECT and CURRENT phone contacts for yourself and anyone that you have listed as an emergency contact for your child.
7. When your child is ill or running a fever please do not give them over-the-counter medication and send them on to school. They will be uncomfortable when the medication wears off midway thru the day and you will probably receive a call to pick them up.
8. If called to pick up your child due to illness please come promptly. Do not tell your child that you will be here in 30 minutes and then not show up for 2 hours. Your child is depending on you!
9.NO MEDICATION IS PROVIDED BY THE SCHOOL! IF YOUR CHILD NEEDS MEDICATION DURING THE SCHOOL DAY YOU MUST PROVIDE IT AND FILL OUT THE PROPER FORM. THE FORMS ARE LISTED HERE FOR YOUR USE AS NEEDED. ALL MEDICATION MUST BE IN THE ORIGINAL CONTAINER AND LIST AN UNEXPIRED DATE.
