Language Arts and Social Studies Students:

Just a few more weeks until spring break and then back to school to start CRCT testing.

In language arts we are almost finished writing our persuasive essays. The beginning of next week students will go to the computer lab and type their final pieces.  This is great practice since 6th grade students will be taking a writing test the following week.

In social studies we are finishing our unit on South America.  This week students are designing a picture using the Mexican Oaxaca form.  The pictures are looking great!  Next week students will begin reviewing maps, charts, graphs, and geography.  We will also spend a week on economics before spring break.

Now is a good time for students to review math, reading, social studies, science. and language arts on SKILLS TUTOR.  If students have a computer at home they can review.

PS  In advisement our spring garden is blooming.  Our little daffadil bulbs have pushed through the ground and look lovely.  Everyday the advisement class wants to go check on the flowers.  I've had to hide the watering jug...students think they need watering everyday.

One more cold spell this weekend and maybe spring will be here for good.

Language Arts and Social Studies 6th grade students

Students and Parents,

In social studies we are continuing our study of Latin America.

5th period students will present projects in class on Wednesday.  They need to bring a sheet of regular size poster board and a glue stick to class tomorrow to glue on their report, flag of country, map, and interesting landmarks.  Reports should be written in ink or typed on the computer and brought to class on Tuesday.

4th period students are doing a powerpoint on volcanoes found in the Latin American region.  Students are combining their science study of volcanoes with their study of Latin America.  They will present their powerpoint slides later this week.

In Language Arts over the next three weeks, students will study pronouns and write a persuasive piece of writing.  We continue to update our writing portfolios and students reflect on their strengths and ways to improve their writing in future assignments.

Social Studies and Language Arts 6-3

Dear parents and students,

Two important dates to remember next week.  Thursday, Oct. 30 is the 6th grade Honor Roll Party

Friday, Oct 31 is the Citation -Free Party

Parents please check for memos that go home today with information about these two events.

Language arts students are finishing up technical writing on Monday.  Students are writing letters to our three administrators.  We will begin our study of expository writing next week.

In Social studies we will begin studying the political systems of Europe next week.  Students designed extraordinary pictures of the French Revolution this week.  They are displayed on the 6th grade walls.

Thanks for everyone who has asked.  I am feeling better today.  I was out most of the day on Wed. and all day yesterday.  Dr. thinks it was a slight reaction to my flu shot.  No more fever and aches...just seems like an ordinary cold now.

Have a great week-end.

Language Arts and Social Studies Students and Parents

Parents and Students,

Reflection Projects for language arts are due this Thursday, Oct. 2 in my room.  After I grade them I will turn them in to the Reflection Committee for evaluation.  Students are writing reflective pieces for the school newspaper about coming to middle school. We are continuing our study of verbs, sentence structure and narrative writing.

In social studies we are finishing our study of early explorers.  Next we will study the Industrial Revolution and French Revolution.  We will have an out-of-school project during one of these chapters.  News about projects will be coming home next week.

Many students are taking advantage of the SkillsTutor program before school and at home on their computer.  This is a great help for math, reading and language arts.

Language Arts and Social Studies Students and Parents

Parents and students,

Language arts students have been writing a scary story this week.  We are carefully going through the processes of editing and evaluating so their papers will have a minimum of mistakes.  Students are combining short sentences into compound sentences to make the writing piece flow.  We are working on sentences starting with adverbs and prepositional phrases instead of the usual noun then verb, etc.  Next we will study action verbs and linking verbs.

In social studies we are studying the two periods in history following the Middle Ages: the Rennaisance and Reformation.  Students will use the lap top computers on Friday to research important men and women during this period.

Progress reports will go home today.  Students should receive seven reports from each of their teachers.  Parents please sign each one and put back in your child's binder so they can turn them in to teachers on Thursday.
