Grading Rubric
Novel Unit
This project can be presented as either a poster (preferably a tri-fold) or a power-point presentation. It must be on an approved novel! Once a novel has been approved, it may only be changed with teacher approval! A novel is, by definition, a minimum of 100 pages. The novel must fit your personal reading level, or be only slightly above. This novel MAY NOT have been made into a movie.
Grades will be weighted as follows:
5%- Neatness and appeal
15%- Setting- Students should have three quoted describing the settings used in their personal novel. These quotes should be of 2-3 sentence length each (or longer if needed), and describe different settings throughout the book. IN ADDITION- each student must include a single summary explaining why these quotes were chosen, and their relevance to the novel. Example:
15%- Characterization-How is the character developed throughout the story? Where does the author reveal the most about the main character? Is it through dialogue, actions, or the thoughts of others? (1-3 paragraphs and 2 quotes)
15%- Theme- Identify the theme of this novel. This should be explained in a short 2-3 paragraph summary. Explain how the theme was communicated throughout the book. (Quotes may be used as needed Example:
15%- Plot Structure (MUST INCLUDE THE TYPES OF CONFLICT!) This may be drawn as a graphic, or written in paragraph form.
15%- Point of View- What point-of-View is the story told from? Why do you feel this author selected that point-of –view for THIS specific story? Was if effective? How would it have impacted the story if the point-of-view had been different? Example:
