Home (work) for the Holiday!

You know what Mrs. Sanford always says!  If you don't use your skills you loose them!  With this in mind, I've given you a plan for some work over the break!  Three projects that focus on Geography, Vocabulary, and technology will help you keep your mind active this holiday season!  A report on each is due as soon as your return January 6.  Each will require a few hours of your time, but you do have 10 days off!  HAPPY HOMEWORK!

As you work on this essay,  I thought it might be helpful to see an example.  Here is the essay we modeled in class.  PLEASE don't copy this essay or revise it!  Create your own, using the sheet we went over in class.  You may use any topic that fits the format, but if you use a social studies topic you will receive a 10 point bonus.

Map Projects/ Supplies

Several students have not turned in their map project that was due 12/9. If you need additional maps, supplies, or help  you can come in after 8:15 on Wednesday or Thursday.  I will NOT be able to stay late on those dates.

Retesting and test corrections offer opportunities for students to improve their test grades.  This Friday, December 12, is the last opportunity for students to take advantage of these things.  After the 12th, I will be unable to grade and record corrections before the end of the grading period.

Social Studies

Monday-Venn Diagrams from Thursday and Friday will be transfered to posters, and three conclusions about the practice of colonization in Africa will be added.

Tuesday- 4th period has a test on Africa's Region #2.

Both 4th and 6th periods have map projects due on colonization in Africa.   These include 5 maps that show the spread of European colonization  over time.  If you have questions about this project, please check out the last 2 posts for this blog.

Wednesday- Both 4th and 6th will be working on the laptops to do research and produce PPTS relating to colonization in Africa.

Monday- (12/16)  PPT Projects due

Tuesday-(12/17) Students will present their PPTS to the class

Wednesday- (12/18) Students will continue to present their PPTS to the class

Reading

Monday- (12/8) Vocabulary Test over Unit #1

Students will receive packet on unit #2

Tuesday- (12/9) Introduce 5 paragraph Essay topics and discuss our next project

Wednesday- (12/10)-  Friday (12/12)  We will be working on composition and revision of 5 paragraph essays using the laptops

Monday-(12/16) Vocabulary test has been moved to Tuesday (12/17)

PLEASE REMEMBER!  All reading students should be reading at home a minimum of 25-30 minutes 5 night each week.  Please keep a log of this reading.  The log is just a list of dates you've read, page numbers, and a 1-2 sentence summary.

Social Studies Projects- due December 9.

Social Studies students are currently working on a series of maps that show the pattern of colonization in Africa.  These maps should be color-coded and displayed in order (oldest to most current).  You may use poster board, or construction paper to display the maps.  PLEASE REMEMBER that each country should be the same color on all maps (France Green on all 5 maps).  Please remember to save blue for the water!  Projects received by Friday are worth an additional 5 points!!!

We will be doing a variety of activities in the classroom.  Any class work that is not finished becomes homework. Students are making notes in the adgenda as a part of my class.  Please remind them to check these notes.

 Please encourage your child to be pro-active!  This unit is very challenging.  By making note cards of vocabulary words and finishing all assignments your child will prepared for tests.

Christmas Count-down has begun!

Students are excited about the upcoming break, but much work remains to be done in the next 2 1/2 weeks.  Reading students are working on a vocabulary unit, as well as maintaining a reading log.

Vocabulary units came home Monday.  These green packets contain 20 words that we will study for one full week.  These words are quite challenging, but they are designed to help build a vocabulary that will benefit you child in tests they might take in the future!  We will study many different aspects of these words, and test over definitions weekly.  Discussing these definitions at home will help your child learn to use these words correctly.

Reading logs are all that will be required for the books your children are currently reading.  These logs should include the date, pages read, and a 2-3 sentence summary of the content of the text.  READING 20-30 MINUTES EACH DAY IS A STANDING HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT!  As I mentioned at the Open House, 5 nights a week are all I require.  I don't care if you would prefer to exchange a couple of weekend nights for school nights in order to lighten the load of homework.  These logs are due December 15.
