Peek of the Week - January 20 -23, 2009

MLK Monday, January 19,  we take a pause to remember and reflect upon the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Following Monday's commerative holiday in his honor, we will embark upon a historic moment history as the first African American president will be inaugurated.  Homework assignments for both reading and social studies will consist of vocabulary and writing assignments related to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the inauguration of our 44th president, Barack Obama.

Peek of the Week for January 12 - 16, 2008

Writing pencil Study Skills: This week we will be working on the writing process: using a graphic organizer, writing a rough draft, editing a rough draft and writing a final copy.  This week's homework is comprised of questions from earlier chapters in the book, The Tale of Despereaux.  image:increaseyourranking.com

Social Studies: We are continuing our Georgia Study unit.  This week's focus is Eli Whitney's cotton gin and its influence on slavery, as well as the Cherokee Native American's Trail of Tears. There will be a test on Wednesday, January 15.  Homework: Study for Friday's test using notes from class.

Language Arts: We are beginning a more in depth study of nouns this week.  We will differetiate singualar and plural, common and proper, and concrete and abstract nouns.  Homework: Nouns Test on Friday, January 16.

ReSee full size imageading: We are still reading the nonfictional text, Bats.  We will continue working on differentiating between facts and opinions.  Homework: Reading Logs and advertisements using facts and opinions.

Peek of the Week for December 15-19, 2008

Dear Families,

Wow, can you believe this is our last blog for the year 2008?  I know I can't!  As the holidays appproach I would like to say thank you to all of the support you give to the children.  M y first semester here at Pine Mountain has been terrific thanks to you and your wonderful children. I hope that you all have a fantastic holiday season and that all your holiday wishes come true!

Charlie Brown Christmas  All Students: Remember Friday, December 19th is our Winter Holiday Celebration! Don't forget to bring your assigned goodies by Thursday, December 18th.

Study Skills: During next week's study skills class, we will continue working with the Tale of Despereaux and finish some of our incomplete journal entries.  Homework- Foreshadowing assignment from The Tale of Despereaux  readings.

Reading: During next week's reading class we will continue reading our chapter book, Matilda and our guided reading book, Bats by Ron Cole.  I will introduce a new Reading Test Prep. warm-up drill.  This week's drill will focus on differentiating between fact and opinion.  Homework- Reading logs, and questions from the stories, Snack Time!  and Winter is Coming

Language Arts:  Next week we will work with helping/linking verbs and compound predicates.

Social Studies:  We'll be working with Georgia geography.

Baby Despereaux Study Skills: This week's study skills focuses on foreshadowing and summarizing.  We're getting closer to the end of our fantastic book, The Tale of Despereaux.  Homework - Reading logs and reading summaries of chapters 30 - 36 from The Tale of Despereaux. Peek of the Week for December 1 - 5, 2008

THANKSGIVING I hope that you had a restful Thanksgiving vacation. Today, we discussed everyone's vacation.  Some of the kids complained about being bored during the holidays, which is so funny to me!  The week before we left for break they were all talking about how they were tired and ready to stay home.  Boy, oh boy, we just can't please our little teenagers! 

Study Skills Class- This week will will work on understanding and using subheadings in reading and writing.

Poetry3 Reading Class- As you know, our reading class is full of "budding poets".  We work on a different type of poetry every other month.  The December/January poetry type is acrostic poems.  We will be writing acrostic poems about our grandmothers this week, as well as reading our book, Bats. Peek of the Week for November 17 -21

Study Skills: This week we will work on writing.  We will work on subjects, predicates and predicate expanders.  At the end of the week will work on chapter 16 of The Tale of Despereaux.

Reading: At beginning of the week we will have a vocabulary and comprehension test on the story, Lon Po Po. Then we will begin reading a new non-fictional book entitled, Bats .

Language Arts:  We will continue working on our writing skills using the program "Framing our Thoughts"  Specifically, we will work on compound subjects and predicates.

Georgia-color Social Studies:  We will continue working on our new "Georgia" unit.

Peek of the Week for the Week of September 28 - October 3, 2008

Study Skills: For the next two or three weeks we will work on foreshadowing.  We will continue to explore this literary strategy in our current story, The Tale of Despereaux.  Remember this week, you have homework from Gallaudet's online magazine publication.  If you forgot what to do, here's an attached copy especially for you!  Download oct_3_study_skills_homework.doc   Have a happy week!

Wolfsketch Reading:  You all did a great job on your wolf reports!  I enjoyed reading all of the great things you learned about these interesting animals.  This week we will finish our October Haiku poems.  We will also begin reading Lon Po Po by Ed Young.  In our chapter book, Matilda, we will read about the dreaded and terrible "Trunchbull".  Here's a copy of this week's homework in case you lose your copy.
